Germany’s antibiotic use in veterinary drugs decreased in 2022 – Swine information

In response to information from the Federal Workplace for Client Safety and Meals Security (BVL), the quantity of antibiotics administered in veterinary drugs in Germany decreased once more in 2022, according to earlier years.


In comparison with 2021, the quantity disbursed decreased by 61 tons to 540 t (-10.1%). In comparison with 2011, the primary 12 months with recorded information, the amount of antibiotics disbursed has fallen by round 68%.


  • The amount of fluoroquinolones decreased by 0.6 tons in comparison with the earlier 12 months, to five tons (-10.1%).
  • The quantity of third and 4th era cephalosporins was 1.1 t (-0.1 t, -10.8%).
  • The quantity of polypeptide antibiotics (primarily colistin) additionally decreased, reaching 44 t (-6.8 t, -13.3%).


As in earlier years, penicillins and tetracyclines represent the biggest share of antibiotics disbursed. In comparison with 2021, a discount of about 7 t (penicillins) and 35 t (tetracyclines) was recorded. Within the case of sulfonamides, the discount is 9 t.
