On August 19, 2023, the Italian National Reference Center for African Swine Fever reported the case that is first of infection in domestic pigs in Lombardy.
The sampling time, August 14, 2023, implemented a written report from a household farm into the municipality of Montebello della Battaglia, province of Pavia, stating mortality that is abnormal completing pigs (166 pets present).
The municipality had been a part of a buffer area perhaps not suffering from the illness so far, right beside the area contaminated by the outbreak in crazy boar (component II) into the northwest regarding the country.

The farm, as reported because of the Italian authorities, had been emptied on August 19 and an investigation that is epidemiological being carried out, which for the moment seems to have ruled out contact with wild boars as the source of infection since there are no affected wild boars in this area. Still, a search for dead boars that are wild the location has been done to attempt to rule this away completely. One other theory becoming considered is the fact that virus features registered through polluted fomites. The italian authorities have taken samples of various materials such as feed, tractor wheels, bedding material, etc. in order to identify the origin of the virus, which currently remains unknown.
